Ken'ichirō Ishiguro "Under maintenance" 193×130.3cm Oil painting, panel, gesso

Ken'ichirō Ishiguro is well-known for his realistic paintings that delve deeply into subculture, methodically incorporating actual events and societal phenomena into his works. Boasting an amazing vision of 2.0 since boyhood, Ishiguro's attention to detail is unrivaled, rendering his works very popular for their complex and lifelike renderings.

"Under Maintenance" stands out as a significant piece, measuring 193 cm tall and 130.3 cm wide. It depicts a young female technician reading a repair handbook on the deck of a "moving Gundam," evoking the attitude of dedication and perfection. This artwork is more than just an art display; it represents the completion of the GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA project, making it a must-see for both fans and art enthusiasts.

The Intention behind the Art

Ishiguro's objective with "Under Maintenance" is more than just artistic expression; it is a critique of Japan's societal setting and the substance of realistic paintings. By incorporating "subculture" aspects into his work, Ishiguro pushes the traditional boundaries of realism, implying that if a viewer can completely immerse themselves and experience the presence of the artwork, it transcends their reality. Yuuki, a mechanic for the Federation Forces, is shown methodically examining a Gundam maintenance manual amidst conflict, which serves as a strong metaphor for dedication, precision, and the blurring of reality and art.
