A radical concept from the Advance of Zeta lineage takes form in the HG series with the debut of the Icarus Unit, a flight system designed for the RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 Hazel Custom. Built around the idea of a single mobile suit achieving sustained flight under gravity, this unit abandons transformation and aerodynamics in favor of overwhelming thrust.
Newly molded parts faithfully recreate the Icarus Unit’s defining features, including thermonuclear rocket engines mounted on the shoulders and thermonuclear jet engines integrated into the legs, dramatically increasing the overall volume and presence of the Hazel Custom. The result is a mobile suit configuration that feels dense, aggressive, and purpose-built for high-speed aerial combat.
Unlike transformable units such as the Prototype Asshimar TR-3 Kehaar, the Icarus Unit achieves flight through brute force. High-output engines in the lower body and shoulders propel the suit into the air, while wing-like stabilizers connected to the shoulder units maintain attitude control during flight. A supplemental generator housed in the waist further supports the immense power demands of the system, drawing inspiration from the Hazel Custom’s movable booster pod.
The shoulder units can rotate forward by 90 degrees, allowing storage within the Gaplant TR-5 Hrairoo, and feature option latches for mounting weapons, shields, or sub arm units. For display and posing, the shoulder assemblies can slide forward and back, while the front and rear armor sections flip upward to recreate the flight configuration.
Included Features and Equipment
- Newly designed thermonuclear rocket engines and beam reflector parts, optimized for the latest HG format
- Beam reflector can be opened and closed to depict deployed and standard states
- Long-range rifle can be reconfigured between stored and deployed modes using included parts
- Compatibility with arm parts from the separately sold HGUC 1/144 Byarlant
- Attached weapons include beam sabers and a long-range rifle
Originally made with aerodynamic wing units, the Icarus project ultimately shifted direction when testing revealed severe limitations in mobile suit form. The final specification embraces pure thrust, resulting in one of the most extreme and concept-driven flight systems in the Gundam TR series.
