The GUNDAM Official Website has published an interview with Tsukuro Hayakawa, the director behind “A boy with GUNDAM | Mobile Suit Gundam 50th Anniversary -Road to 50- Prologue Movie.”
Released on May 15, 2026, the short film is part of the Gundam 50th Anniversary Project, which looks ahead to the 50th anniversary of the Gundam anime in 2029.
In the new “GUNDAM CREATOR JOURNEY” interview, Hayakawa talks about his childhood fascination with animation, his first experiences creating moving drawings, and how working with LEGO and video game models helped him develop an understanding of 3D environments.
One of his biggest creative influences was Tom and Jerry. Hayakawa explains that he wanted “A boy with GUNDAM” to communicate through music and character emotions without dialogue, similar to the style of the classic animated series.
Hayakawa also discusses his approach to mecha animation. For “A boy with GUNDAM,” he wanted to explore a more traditional mecha anime style with expressive movement rather than focusing strictly on realism. He also reveals that his first Gundam anime was Mobile Suit Gundam 00, which he watched with his sister and credits as an important influence on his view of mecha anime.
The interview also covers one of the short film’s memorable Mobile Fighter G Gundam moments, including Hayakawa’s thoughts on the series and the reaction he hoped to capture from longtime Gundam fans.
Looking ahead, Hayakawa says he hopes to continue directing anime and eventually create an original work of his own, with a particular interest in exploring the mecha anime genre.
