An interview with Kenji Kamiyama, director of the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO (Alex Zero), has been released following his appearance at San Diego Comic-Con. The new Gundam TV anime is scheduled to air in April 2027.
Kamiyama discussed the series’ setting, its connection to GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, and the ideas behind creating a new Gundam timeline.
A New Story of Humanity’s Struggle
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO follows humanity as it fights for survival on Earth after an interstellar object arrives from outside the solar system. The object eventually becomes known as the Apocalypse.
The story focuses on the conflicts and growth of young boys and girls as the war unfolds around them.
Kamiyama explained that the anime has its own original timeline rather than being part of an existing Gundam timeline.
He also discussed his long connection with the Gundam series, describing the original Mobile Suit Gundam as a major influence on him. He recalled being around the same age as its protagonist when the series first aired and said the characters’ emotions left a strong impression on him.
Sharing a World With GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT
The anime and GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT were developed around a shared setting.
According to Kamiyama, the game team initially proposed a concept centered on Gundams fighting giant space monster-like enemies. The anime team then developed the setting, including the nature of the enemy and the structure of the war, before creating the story around those elements.
The game later expanded that shared setting with its story set 100 years later.
Kamiyama also explained that the enemy concept was initially developed around the game’s controls and gameplay. The anime team then adapted the shared concept to suit the needs of an animated series.
A Gundam Series With a Different Setting
Kamiyama said he was first offered the opportunity to direct a Gundam series around five years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic. His other directing projects delayed his start on the project, but he was ultimately drawn to the chance to create an original Gundam series with a setting fundamentally different from previous entries.
The director also explained some of the choices behind the characters. The protagonist is named Ray, a decision intended to help viewers immediately recognize him as the central character within the new timeline.
The series also features characters associated with the color red. Kamiyama said this was deliberately used to help viewers intuitively understand the significance of red within the Gundam series.
