HG 1/144 Gundam G40 (Industrial Design Ver.) - Release Info, Box art and Official Images

HG 1/144 Gundam G40 (Industrial Design Ver.)
Release Date: December 2019
Price: 3,300 Yen

Ken Okuyama's RX-78-2 Gundam [G40] offers variety of new features for the Gundam itself! Including wide range of articulation from head to toe. This kit offers new engineering that represent the RX-78-2 Gundam to another definition.

The kit is provided with never-before-seen gimmicks that gives the kit a unique and solid presentation. The prototype also proves that this collaborative project is not just for show, but to prove once again that GunPla can be taken to different levels of perspective.

This box art is just a representation of the actual one. Made as a sample box art image by GKC

Each armors are divided into different segments, giving the kit a great or rather excellent range of articulation. All of the parts were carefully engineered by Okuyama himself, taking inspiration from his previous non-Gundam related works and translated them to the GunPla world, imagining the RX-78-2 into a more realistic presentation.

Okuyama is also known for designing some of Ferrari cars including Enzo Ferrari and Ferrari P4/5.

THIS PROJECT IS PART OF KEN OKUYAMA X GUNPLA 40TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT.

-The kit will be produced in limited numbers. Quantity varies in different locations. Merchandise will be discontinued after the production.

  1. Joint work is great, other than that just pure garbage.

  2. It really has to have some amazing engineering to justify those looks.
It looks like it was inflated like a balloon.

  3. Honestly I kind of prefer a oddity over recycling old designs with slight variations. I'll take a experimental design over a dozenth Unicorn any day.

  4. Gasp! Toe articulation on an HG? AND amazing torso movement? I'LL TAKE TWO!

    1. The HG Zaku Origin has feet articulation too but this one is more amazing. Three point articulation instead of two.

  5. Woah wait a sec- does anyone see that waist frame lowering from inside the waist armor??

    1. It also looks like the part where the leg connects to the hip joint can extend as well.

  6. It's the ugliest RX-78 design I've ever seen. Why they hire a car designer to make a powerful war robot? It ends up looking like sofubi toys for kids.
When they said they would redesign the gundam I was expecting it something like RX-78 evolve, or at least the origin which for me has mor realistic armaments to be a war robot.

  7. gundam's bizzare adventures: bandai is unbreakable

  8. A gundam designed by someone who designs cars?
    It actually looks more realistic.

The articulation is impressive, especially considering the fixed skirt.

    1. I think it's pretty cool. I look at it like the evolution of cars. They were super boxy in the '70s and '80s and modern cars have a much more curvy, streamlined design. I love the original design immensely, but this is definitely a fun take for the 40th anniversary. Can't believe people are getting so worked up about it.

  9. If that's the way the Gundam's gimmicks are gonna be, then it makes me really excited for the rest of the Ken Okuyama designs being made into Gunpla if they're gonna have articulation like this.

  10. I really don't like the way the waist section is designed on this thing, the joint drops below the skirts to do all of its posing rather than the skirts moving and it looks unnatural

  11. Im prefer original Rx-78 Revive is way better and also very cheap unlike this new one.Seriously, its weapons come with a Beam Riffle,Beam Saber and prototype Rx-78 shield.

  12. Still don't like the design. Articulation is surely amazing, but gunpla is not about articulation alone. With that price, I prefer buying an MG ver.3 or its RG variant which have amazing articulation and 3x looks better than this.

  13. I was wishing for an HG Origin rx 78 and saw this just 2 hours later posted by Gunplanerd. I was STOKED and it seems interesting, can't wait to get it

  14. A redisig is a good idea but this is not it. While the articulation sounds good this is something that's mostly gonna stay on your shelf so it needs to have the looks and this just doesn't. It doesn't even seem to have a core fighter. The neck just looks bad from most angles. And the shield has this weird white line that used to be something with a purpose but is now just out of place...

  15. Tbh I'm more excited for the Zaku redesigns that this. However with the engineering and articulation that went into this kit, I feel like it would be a good base kit for a kitbash or custom build.

  16. I like this new design! I wonder if the Gundam Movie's design will be similar to this.

  17. The feet makes it look like its wearing sneakers

  18. Dear God, it looks Terrible. The tiny leg thrusters, the white frame parts, the heinous head, and the putrid waist are all competing for the ugliest features.

  19. i think if they didn't seamline the face mask it'd look much better. just seamline the face vents only then you're all good

  20. Man people sure aren't familiar with Industrial design and it's design process. I'm betting they aren't familiar with Katoki's career or what his job entails

    1. It has nothing to do with consumer preference. I respect Ken Okuyama as much as I respect Hajime Katoki. Just like food, some people prefer a specific menu, while others don't, and that doesn't mean they don't respect the chef's works. It's all about "taste".

  21. The video talking about the design process made me appreciate this design a lot more, and I'm very glad about that - especially since the video also gave us a better look at the kit at multiple angles.

I do have to wonder if the tech that went into this model kit will be used in the future...?

  22. It's more like an industrial design take on a 1/144 scale model than an industrial design take on an 18m robot, which I suppose is reasonable if HG is all you have to work with

  23. Damn so it is a retail limited release. I need to buy this ASAP.

  24. Why the hell would Mr. Oguyama give this Gundam a fixed skirt armor? It's like a slap in a face after those complex engineering for the articulation. Was it for the sake
of aerodynamics? Was it not enough to make the skirt more round and not fused them together?

    1. Do you even watch the G40 interview video? They wanted to do that because the Gundam in original 0079 anime doesn't seem to have moving skirt.
