The upcoming live-action Gundam movie will be canon to the Universal Century, according to actor Noah Centineo.
Centineo recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, where he shared a few details about the highly anticipated Gundam adaptation.
According to Centineo, the movie will take place within the Universal Century canon, the timeline that began with the original Mobile Suit Gundam and its conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.
“It’s a big action romance space movie. It lives in the Universal Century canon of Gundam, for those who know,” Centineo said.
While he did not reveal which characters will appear, Centineo compared the story to a “non-Shakespearean Romeo And Juliet in Space.”
The confirmation that the movie will be part of the Universal Century canon is particularly interesting for Gundam fans, as the franchise has explored numerous alternate timelines over the years while continuing to return to the Universal Century.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam introduced the Universal Century through the One Year War between the Earth Federation and Zeon, with Amuro Ray becoming the pilot of the RX-78-2 Gundam.
For the live-action movie, however, it remains unclear where within the Universal Century timeline the story will take place and which characters will appear.
The film stars Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, with Jim Mickle directing.
