Bandai Spirits to Use LIMEX for the First Time to Produce GunPla

Bandai Spirits announces that it will start commercializing a GunPla model that uses "LIMEX" as its main material.

Bandai Spirits will be using Gundam Kun as its first LIMEX model and it will be making its debut as a bonus model kit for the upcoming September issue of the Takarajimasha's men's fashion magazine, Smart! that will be released on July 25th, 2022 in Japan, nationwide. Reservation starts June 10th.

LIMEX is a new material born in Japan that contains calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which is obtained from limestone, and mixed with small amount of polymeric resin as a binder.

By using limestone as the new main raw material instead of the petroleum-derived plastics that they were using in the past, it is now possible to reduce the ratio of petroleum-derived plastics in products to 50% or less on a weight basis.

In addition, by using this new material for their GunPla products, they will contribute to the reduction of the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, with their aim to reduce the pollution made by older raw plastic materials.

  2. That's nice and all, but how does this LIMEX stuff measure up on a quality stand point?

    1. I guess we'll have to find out. If Bandai's using it, it would have to be a pretty decent amount right?

I'm more wondering if this use of LIMEX will have an adverse effect on the overall price of Gunpla

  3. I wonder if this will affect paint adhesion or the types of glue that will work with it or if it'll remain safe to sand down.
