As After War Gundam X celebrate its 30th anniversary this year (2026), the series has suddenly started gaining noticeable momentum through new GunPla announcements and renewed attention surrounding the franchise. While Gundam Wing has dominated much of the spotlight during its own 30th anniversary celebration, recent developments suggest Gundam X may finally be receiving long-overdue recognition as well.
The biggest sign came during the 64th Shizuoka Hobby Show, where Bandai officially revealed the upcoming HGAW 1/144 Gundam Virsago and Gundam Ashtaron model kits. Both mobile suits, piloted by the Frost brothers in the original series, are among the most requested designs from the After War timeline and have been absent from the HGAW lineup for years. The kits are scheduled for release in October and November 2026.
The HGAW line itself has existed since 2010, but releases from Gundam X have remained relatively limited compared to other alternate universe Gundam series. The arrival of both Virsago and Ashtaron now raises questions about whether Bandai could be preparing a broader push for the anniversary year.
Originally airing from April 5, 1996 to December 28, 1996, After War Gundam X was the seventh main Gundam television series and featured a post-apocalyptic setting that stood apart from many previous entries in the franchise. The series followed Garrod Ran and the crew of the Freeden during the aftermath of the devastating Seventh Space War. Despite its unique worldbuilding and darker tone, the anime only ran for 39 episodes after its planned run was shortened during broadcast.
Over the years, Gundam X has gradually developed a stronger reputation among Gundam viewers, especially for its story, soundtrack, and mechanical designs like the Gundam Double X, Virsago, and Ashtaron. The series has also continued appearing in games, manga projects, and anniversary discussions despite receiving far less promotional support compared to other 90s Gundam titles.
With Gundam approaching its 50th anniversary in 2029 and Bandai Namco continuing to revisit older series through GunPla, merchandise, and special projects, the timing feels notable for Gundam X. Whether these new HGAW kits are simply standalone releases or the beginning of something larger remains unknown, but for now, After War Gundam X is receiving more visible attention than it has in years.
