Beneath all the giant mobile suits and wild science-fiction concepts of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is a surprisingly modern fear: what happens when humanity adopts technology that it can no longer fully control?
In a new interview with Variety, director Kenji Kamiyama discussed the ideas behind the upcoming Gundam series and revealed that the alien threat at the center of the story serves as a metaphor for humanity's increasingly complicated relationship with technology, including artificial intelligence.
“I think the question is whether we can truly master a technology we did not create ourselves, or will we end up being used by it?” Kamiyama explained. “It is a metaphor for technologies that humanity is already beginning to struggle to handle in reality, such as AI.”
That idea plays a major role in the setting of the new series.
The story follows Ray Azumi, a war orphan voiced by Takeo Otsuka, who awakens on the lunar surface before becoming the pilot of the experimental Gundam ZERO.
Decades before the events of the series, humanity was forced to leave Earth after encountering a mysterious alien object that introduced three extraordinary technologies: gravity control, faster-than-light communication and cognitive materialization.
Those discoveries would ultimately have disastrous consequences.
The technologies lead to the emergence of a hostile, self-replicating ecosystem, forcing humanity to abandon Earth and begin an entirely different era of civilization.
Rather than telling the story immediately after the catastrophe, Kamiyama wanted the characters to live in a society where humanity's exile from Earth had already become an ordinary part of life.
He felt the story would be more interesting if viewers were able to imagine what happened before the events of the series instead of having the entire history of the world explained right away.
And honestly, that feels like a very Gundam way to introduce a new timeline.
A Gundam Story Built Around Technology Humanity Cannot Fully Understand
The three alien technologies aren't simply interesting science-fiction ideas. They form the foundation of the conflict Kamiyama wanted to explore.
The director discussed the challenge of figuring out what these technologies actually meant, what happened to Earth, what the hostile ecosystem was, and how humanity eventually created a mobile suit capable of fighting it.
Kamiyama also worked with novelist Toh EnJoe, who served as the project's science-fiction setting supervisor, to develop the concepts behind the new world.
That includes some seriously ambitious ideas involving gravity, faster-than-light communication and cognitive materialization.
So yes, we're getting Gundam, but we're also getting a pretty serious dose of science-fiction to think about.
RG XARX-ZERO And Gundam Rogue Orbit Are Connected
One of the most interesting details from the interview is the connection between Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and Gundam Rogue Orbit.
According to Kamiyama, the project originally began with the game.
The game did not initially have a fully established setting, so Kamiyama began developing the world by asking a very Gundam question:
What does Gundam fight?
That question eventually led him to develop the history of the world, the alien threat, the creatures humanity would encounter and the circumstances that would eventually result in the development of Gundam ZERO.
The gameplay itself was handled by the game's development team. Kamiyama explained that games have their own strengths, especially the enjoyment that comes from gameplay and controls, while his focus was on constructing the larger world and its story.
That helps explain why RG XARX-ZERO feels like more than a straightforward anime adaptation of Gundam Rogue Orbit.
The two projects are being developed as parts of a much larger story.
Kamiyama revealed that the timeline he developed stretches at least 50 years before the events of RG XARX-ZERO, while also reaching toward a possible future connected to the game 100 years later.
That's a pretty massive playground for a brand-new Gundam timeline.
Why Create Another Gundam Timeline?
Kamiyama has worked on major franchises including Ghost in the Shell, Ultraman, The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Working with those franchises also means dealing with fanbases that already have strong expectations.
His approach is to introduce his own ideas while respecting what fans already expect from those worlds.
For Gundam, that meant finding a balance between familiar elements and something genuinely new.
“I try to prepare surprises while taking the utmost care not to stray from that consensus,” Kamiyama said.
He also views the anti-war theme as something universal, capable of remaining relevant even as the nature of warfare changes.
That feels especially fitting for Gundam.
Kamiyama believes the way wars are fought can change from one era to another, while the unease surrounding conflicts happening today can still influence how stories about war are told.
That also gave him an opportunity to create a new Gundam setting without being tied to the Universal Century or another established timeline.
A New Gundam With A Very Different Question
What makes Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO particularly interesting is that its central conflict doesn't appear to be simply about humanity fighting an enemy with superior technology.
Instead, it asks whether humanity can truly control the technology it discovers.
And when that technology is something humanity never created in the first place, the situation becomes even more complicated.
With Gundam ZERO, Ray Azumi, the mysterious alien technologies and the events that eventually lead into Gundam Rogue Orbit, Kamiyama is creating a new Gundam universe that could stretch across generations.
For a franchise that has spent decades exploring war, humanity and technology, that feels like a fitting direction for its next major chapter.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is scheduled to launch in 2027, with animation produced by Sola Animation and production by Bandai Namco Filmworks.
