The models will be cased in a satellite called "G-SATELLITE" which will be launched in space in 2020. The plan is to program the models to send data to greet and inspire athletes during their games.

The 1/200 scale prototype models of RX-78-2 Gundam, and Char's Zaku II were presented to Japanese JAXA astronauts Nobuo Kanai and Junichi Noguchi by BANDAI HOBBY CENTER on September 4th.

The models are made of resin material with temperature resistance of -60 °C to 240 °C! It is also coated with special cosmic paint produced by JAXA and Dongda to protect the models from possible damages during its launch and deployment in space.

  1. Excellent sculpting and proportions, superb mechanical detail, AND temperature and condition resistant materials?

That's how you know they're serious about this

  2. Those look rather large for 1/200 scale. Unless the two astronauts are really only 3 feet tall.

    2. Oh I get why people are confused. There's 4 different models. 2 of them are being held by those astronauts Those ones are 1/48 scale. The other 2 are the smaller 1/200 ones made of resin in that open case looking thing. The smaller ones are being launched into space.
