Bandai Namco may finally be taking Gundam somewhere fans never expected.

Revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026, Gundam Rogue Orbit instantly stood out from previous Gundam games thanks to its darker sci-fi atmosphere, photorealistic visuals, and aggressive high-speed combat. Instead of leaning into familiar Gundam game formulas, Rogue Orbit looks determined to push the franchise into completely new territory.

The upcoming action game places players in control of Rex, pilot of the Gundam Helix, alongside his Haro companion Vee. Together, they face an unknown enemy threatening humanity across a massive space setting filled with cinematic battles and brutal mobile suit combat.

What surprised many fans most was the game’s overall tone. The trailer barely resembled a traditional Gundam game at first glance. The environments looked grounded and realistic, while the combat focused heavily on speed, destruction, and close-range melee action. One scene even shows the Gundam Helix carving through enemies with an enormous sword in a sequence that felt closer to a modern action blockbuster than a classic Gundam title.

Bandai Namco also confirmed that the game is being developed using Unreal Engine, helping deliver the detailed visuals and large-scale battle sequences shown in the reveal trailer. From lighting effects to debris-filled space combat, Rogue Orbit already feels far more cinematic than many previous Gundam video games.

Some longtime fans may need time to adjust to the game’s very different direction, but many are already praising Bandai Namco for stepping outside its comfort zone instead of simply repeating the same ideas again. After years of more traditional Gundam releases, Rogue Orbit feels like an attempt to reintroduce Gundam gaming to a wider modern audience.

The game is currently scheduled for release in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Alongside the announcement, Bandai Namco also launched the game’s official website and official X account as the road toward release officially begins.
