April 7th has now been officially recognized as “Gundam Day” by the Japan Anniversary Association as part of the “Gundam 50th Anniversary Project,” marking a major milestone for one of anime’s most influential franchises. The newly designated anniversary date commemorates the first television broadcast of Mobile Suit Gundam, which originally aired on April 7th, 1979.

According to the announcement, various initiatives and celebrations are planned to take place every year on April 7th moving forward. While exact details have yet to be fully revealed, the annual event is expected to become a major celebration point for Gundam fans across multiple series, projects, collaborations, and merchandise campaigns.

The announcement was made as part of the larger “Gundam 50th Anniversary Project,” which is already shaping up to be one of the franchise’s biggest commemorative efforts to date. Additional Gundam-related announcements were also revealed during the “Gundam Conference 2026 SPRING” event held on May 15th.

With Gundam approaching its historic 50th anniversary, officially establishing “Gundam Day” feels like a fitting way to celebrate the legacy of a franchise that has influenced anime, GunPla, gaming, and pop culture worldwide for generations.
