Can you believe it's been 30 years since Mobile Suit Gundam Wing first aired in Japan on April 7, 1995? I still remember the excitement that surrounded its release and the lasting impact it had on fans worldwide. From the iconic Wing Gundam's dramatic debut to the unforgettable personalities of Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei, Gundam Wing left an indelible mark on the Gundam franchise—and anime as a whole. It wasn't just a show—it became a cultural phenomenon that introduced many to the complex world of Mobile Suit Gundam and changed the landscape of anime forever.

As we celebrate this milestone, it’s amazing to reflect on how Gundam Wing reshaped the landscape of anime in the late '90s. The series was a gateway for many fans who were discovering Gundam for the first time. Its unique blend of political intrigue, complex characters, and massive mechs made it stand out in the sea of anime at the time. And don’t get me started on the mechs! The Wing Gundam, Deathscythe, Heavyarms, Sandrock, and Altron still hold a special place in our hearts. Each one had its own distinct flair, and it wasn’t just about the machines—they each represented the personalities and struggles of their pilots in such a powerful way.

But it wasn’t just the mobile suits that made Gundam Wing legendary. It was the entire world-building, the deep themes of war, peace, and rebellion that really resonated. Heero’s stoic and emotionally distant nature, Duo’s charm and wit, Trowa’s calm demeanor, Quatre’s heart, and Wufei’s unyielding drive—these characters were more than just faces behind mechs. They were flawed, they were complex, and their journeys made us question the very nature of conflict and humanity.

And let’s not forget the incredible music! Gundam Wing brought us some of the most iconic anime openings and endings. Who doesn’t get goosebumps when they hear "Just Communication" or "Rhythm Emotion"? Those songs will forever be linked to the series, evoking memories of those early days when we first tuned in, eagerly anticipating what would happen next.

Here are the opening sequences featuring both songs, via Crunchyroll's YouTube channel.

Over the past three decades, Gundam Wing has become a cultural touchstone, influencing countless fans and creators. It even paved the way for the Gundam franchise to expand into the West, introducing the broader world to the larger Mobile Suit Gundam universe. From the toys and Gunpla to the manga, novels, and endless fan theories, Gundam Wing has endured in the hearts of so many.

Now, we’re celebrating its 30th anniversary, and this year also marks the 45th anniversary of GunPla! What an exciting time to be a fan of both! I can’t help but wonder what surprises are in store for us on the GunPla release horizon. Might we finally get the Real Grade 1/144 Wing Gundam Zero? And could we be treated to brand-new HGAC kits this year to complement the legacy of the original series? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: The world of Gundam and GunPla is as thrilling as ever. Let’s all find out together!

So here’s to the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing series—one of the most iconic and beloved entries in the Gundam universe. The fandom is as strong as ever, and I know I’m not alone when I say this series will continue to inspire new generations of fans. Whether you’re revisiting the show for the umpteenth time or discovering it for the first time, the magic of Gundam Wing is undeniable. Here's to another 30 years of mobile suits, deep stories, and legendary characters!

Happy 30th Anniversary, Gundam Wing! You’ll never be forgotten. And here’s to the next chapter in this epic journey—GunPla’s 45th anniversary is going to be one for the books!

  1. For the love of god, please release TV series kits. the Ver.KA EW is nice but the TV series kits are what people want. Its what we remember the most. I think ill vomit if i see another pair of angel wings lol. Bandai need to respect the TV series designs way more. They are iconic. But alas, i'm not hopeful. Even after 30 years.

    1. Uh dude? They have them already for 1/144 scale. Nearly the entire cast, actually.

Unless you're talking about MG kits, in which case even with the no grade kits we're still horribly lacking.

    2. We have nearly all of them in HG, but not MG. Even with the no grade 1/100 kits we aren't even close to complete.

  2. I feel so old now... I watched this series back in high school and still remember the excitement of seeing them fly around. It was such a refreshing experience to see new mechs on American TV, especially something different from Transformers.

  3. I'm really hoping for some good merch to drop!!! I'll be buying them all! I need a Ver.Ka of OG Wing, metal robot spirits heavyarms and sandrock to drop already, and anything else they willing to drop!

  4. Pretty sure they'd milk the MGSD WZC and make an EW version out of it. The Wing Zero TV is long overdue now.
