Gundam SEED FREEDOM’s Epic Journey in CG Creation Unveiled at Tokyo Event

The "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM" staff speaking event, named "CG Asset Edition," that took place on April 2nd at Shinjuku Piccadilly in Tokyo was a success, showing the intensive and intricate process of creating the series' CG assets. The ceremony highlighted the production team's dedication and good morale after more than a year of work on significant CG models such as the Archangel and Millennium battleships, as well as roughly 60 mobile suit models produced for the series.

During the event, Producer Toshikazu Naka and 3DCG Production Desk Head Fujita Shinmu discussed the difficult process of translating traditional anime designs into 3D models, the decision to expand CG model use as confidence in the technology grew, and the intricate detailing that went into battleship models—which culminated in over a year's work for some.

The team also invested heavily in CG effects, particularly the "wings of Destiny Gundam and Strike Freedom Gundam" and "water landing" effects, demonstrating a commitment to producing high-quality images. They shared examples about models that were planned but not used, highlighting the fluid and dynamic nature of the manufacturing process.

The session concluded with a statement of appreciation for the audience and a teaser for future discussions, emphasizing the passion and creativity behind "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM," reflecting the series' ongoing success and impact on fans.

During its astonishing 60-day run in Japanese cinemas, "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom" not only soared, but also rewrote the Gundam saga's records. This cinematic masterpiece has become the highest-grossing Gundam picture to date, with an impressive 4.1 billion yen (roughly 27.1 million USD) in revenue from 2.43 million tickets sold since its premiere on January 26, 2024.
