A "Sweet" Change of Direction
The anticipated live-action "Gundam" is making significant strides forward, with a major shake-up in its production. Initially announced under Netflix, the project has now moved away from the streaming platform and is undergoing a complete overhaul in creative direction. Jim Mickle, known for his work as the showrunner and writer on Netflix's Sweet Tooth, has taken on the dual role of director and writer for the upcoming film.
Mickle’s experience with complex storytelling and his background in genre-driven narratives position him as an intriguing choice for Gundam. From his award-winning Stake Land, which resonated for its dark, atmospheric storytelling, to Hap and Leonard, which revealed his skill for creating nuanced, layered characters, Mickle has shown a unique ability to blend intense drama with character depth. This creative foundation is well-suited for adapting the vast emotional stakes and high-intensity battles central to Gundam’s appeal.
Despite the platform change, the production will remain in the hands of Legendary Pictures in collaboration with Bandai Namco Filmworks, ensuring the franchise’s faithful representation. With production slated to start in early 2025, fans are closer than ever to seeing the iconic mobile suits come to life on the big screen.
Further updates on casting, story details, and release timeline are expected soon.
This isn't the best of news, IMO, such a drastic change of direction this late in the game, plus any time a director is also the writer I get a little nervous. Here's hoping I'm proven wrong, though!
