A Look Back at the 7 Gundam Life-Sized Statues

Time flies, Gundam fans are heading in to a very bright future.

Looking back at the life sized Gundam statues to celebrate the launching of the full sized 1/1 RX-93ff nu Gundam at the Lalaport Fukuoka on April 25th, 2022!


Gundam has started promoting the life sized Gundam project back in 2009, it became so popular, they continued the campaign and created more to share the love of Gundam up to this day and more years to come.

In 2009, they first launched the 1/1 scale RX-78-2 Gundam ver.G30th to celebrate the franchise 30th anniversary. The statue was first erected at the Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Shiokaze Park from July 11th to August 31st, 2009.


The first launching was a hit, they continued the project by installing the RG 1/1 scale RX-78-2 Gundam at the Higashishizuoka Square, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture from July 24th, 2010, to March 27th, 2011. This event was also celebrated with the very first release of the GunPla version of the statue in 1/144 scale under the Real Grade GunPla lineup. This statue was also equipped with a beam saber on its right hand.

The RX-78-2 Gundam statue made another appearance at the Koto-ku, Tokyo, DiverCity Tokyo Festival Square for a 5-year run from April 19th, 2012, to March 5th of 2017. The statue was presented with renewed decal seals and 3d light mapping presentations at night. This version was called the RG 1/1 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.GFT (Gundam Front Tokyo).

A few months after the dismantling of the last RX-78-2 Gundam statue, Gundam announces the launching of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver. TWC (Tokyo Water Front) to commemorate the conclusion of the Mobile Suit Gundam UC OVA in 2017, that replaced the 1/1 scale RX-78-2 Gundam ver. GFT's post in Tokyo, DiverCity Tokyo Festival Square. This statue made its first debut on September 24th of 2017 and celebrating its 5th anniversary this year (2022). 

The statue was the very first ambitious Gundam life-sized project where it features a transformation between Unicorn to its Destroy mode. It also features 50 parts that emits light during its night presentation, with matching music and video mapping depending on occasions.


Three years after the Unicorn Gundam Ver. TWC's launch, Gundam's 40th anniversary announced the most awaited launching of the very first moving Gundam called RX-78F00. The moving Gundam statue was first launched on December 19th, 2020 and is now announced to extend its stay until March 31st, 2024. This statue located at the Yamashita Wharf, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture at the GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA.


In between the launching of life-sized Gundam statue project is the announcement of the 1/1 scale ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam Ver. GCP (Gundam China Project) at the LaLaport Gold Bridge, Shanghai, China. This statue was first launched n May 28, 2021.


The newest 1/1 scale Gundam statue was launched on April 25, 2022 and is now being celebrated at the front of the Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Fukuoka. This launch features the RX-93ff nu Gundam, a revised version of the RX-93 nu Gundam from the Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack film. This statue features a never-before-seen long range fin funnel that is especially made for this particular Yoshiyuki Tomino owned project. The statue also features moving parts for its right arm and head movements. It also celebrates the opening of the Gundam Side-F facility that is located inside the LaLaport Fukuoka itself.

The RX-93ff nu Gundam is by far the tallest among the seven statues featured in their project. It stands about 24.8m including its long range fin funnel (top of head 20.5m).
