Perfect Grade Unleashed RX-78-2 Gundam - Release Info

Perfect Grade Unleashed RX-78-2 Gundam
Release Date: December 2020
Price: 27,500 Yen

Bandai Spirits has revealed the design of the new Perfect Grade Unleased RX-78-2 Gundam during their VR presentation in October. The teaser video reveals the concept of the upcoming kit, showing some never-before-seen features in any GunPla to date.

The kit showcases some open hatch gimmicks, also including some LED features. The modernized design of the RX-78-2 Gundam celebrates the evolution of GunPla through 40 years of its existence.

The entire build of the kit also features 5 phases where it starts from its deep inner framing, covered with layers of numerous detailing and add-ons.

PHASE 1

- The whole bone structure of the kit lies in its deeper inner framing which makes the whole structure stands. This includes pre-molded parts for its jointed parts, like arms and legs.

PHASE 2

- Giving the kit a little more movability by providing some multiple joint parts in its inner framing. These joints acts as additional support to the inner structure's stability and to help provide the kit bending movements.

PHASE 3

- GunPla's inner framing just got better with the help of metallic texture framing. These parts provides more detailing to the inner frame's structure, giving it some realistic mechanical feel and some special highlights. The parts also gives more weight to the inner framing, keeping its stability when posed.

PHASE 4

- Detailing had just gotten more fun by using the provided etch films that adds some extended detailing to its inner framing and outer armor pieces.
- Each film are also printed in colors that adds interesting highlights to the kit.

PHASE 5

- The kit's finishing touch features light emitting sections, provided by the new 2-lamp LED lights that casts lights to different parts of its structure, that includes the eye cameras, chest vents. The beam saber also has a tiny LED light installed in its hilt that reflects to the beam effect part when activated.

- The final build of the kit can also perform a full open-hatch gimmick, which also is one of the many amazing assets of a Perfect Grade model kit.

  1. That looks sick! Can't wait to see the full reveal.

  2. I'm so getting this, price is ok, the deliver is going to hurt me as always... Those are some very detailed fists. Please God, don't let it be a detailed brick, please.

  3. That seems rather expensive compared to previous PG releases

    1. Look at everything your getting. It's fairly priced.

    2. I can't say I agree. The kit certainly looks really good, but the articulation seems limited (especially in the torso) and it's missing accessories like the bazooka. It really looks like an old style PG done with modern tech, and I don't see why it should be more than twice the price of the original PG.

    3. @Unknown

Define "limited", since from everything I'm seeing it has modern gunpla articulation, which cannot be described as "limited" in any measure.

The torso articulation is obviously hampered by the Core Fighter being what it is, but the fact that it actually has ANY torso articulation at all is significantly more than what the old PG which had none at all. It also has significantly more points of articulation like on the hips and shoulders as shown off here, which the old PG didn't have. Lastly, this PG will have stuff like photo-etched metal parts and LED lighting gimmicks, which again the old PG didn't have.

      Delete
    4. @Unknown then just go buy the old PG RX-78 if you think the insane amount of added detail, better stability and rigidity, lighting including the BEAM SABER!, and Colored photo-etched parts are not worth the increased price; and it's not P-bandai or a Gundam Base exclusive.

    5. Unless the promo pictures are just poorly done, the articulation for this new PG seems to be about as good as a general MG release (or maybe the PG Exia). The shoulders seem better, and the torso seems worse. Is that really good enough for the new PG “unleashed”, and at this price? We’ve seen very good Rx-78-2 articulation done in the core fighterless MG Gundam: The Origin release, so we know it’s possible.

This kit looks very nice, but I’m concerned about the future it represents. The Rx-78-2 is the most basic of all the Gundam suits, and this kit has the most basic accessories it could but still charges nearly $300. If this is the new PG price what will future releases be priced at? For what is included in this box, I don’t think the price is appropriate.

    6. This Pg has the most articulation in any gunpla to date.
If that isn't good enough then I don't know what is...

    7. "We’ve seen very good Rx-78-2 articulation done in the core fighterless MG Gundam: The Origin release, so we know it’s possible."

Exactly, "core-fighterless". The MG Gundam The Origin can afford good torso articulation because it has no Core Fighter to worry about. Despite the new technology on the PG Unleashed, the fact of the matter is that the basic design of how the RX-78-2's Core Fighter slots into the Gundam will impede its articulation. It has to adhere to the basic design afterall, and it doesn't have the more advanced Core Fighter systems of designs like the GP-01 that allow for great torso articulation.

Also, how much articulation do you need out of a Gunpla anyway? Your "general MG" release typically has very good articulation where it matters, and asides from the aforementioned Core Fighter issue endemic to this design the PH Unleashed RX-78-2 doesn't have anything that can impede its articulation. Just looking at its basic appearance it's not going to have articulation worse than say the PG Unicorn that's for sure.

This new PG is more expensive primarily because it looks to have significantly more parts than the old PG RX-78-2, and all of its gimmicks like the die-cast metal parts, photo-etched metal plates, and the lighting system further drive up its price.

    1. In PG land and what you get for the price, it's fair.

      Delete
    2. Not really, fair is subjective and relative. It is pretty expensive for this PG.

    3. For the added photo etched parts, metal parts, LED (also for the beam saber), a really cool looking inner frame which we have not seen lately with the previous perfect grades, this PG is cheap compared to a PG Exia Lighting Model.

    4. Still expensive even with photo etched parts, metal parts, and LED parts. It is a PG, of course the inner frame is more detail, but not for $250.

    1. Metal etched stickers, aluminum and metal parts.

    2. You can see them in the last image, if they're what I'm thinking they are. Look at the shoulders, the chest vents, etc - those thin silver pieces look like the mentioned etched pieces to me.

  6. That's a very reasonable price. Metal parts, LED included. A better value then the MG EX UNICORN I think. I'm definitely getting it. My local shop will be selling it for $290 with s and h. My first PG.

  7. I was expecting it to be at least 400˘, tbh. This will be preordered no doubt, I hope to grab one in time.

  8. Wow 27k yen. It's become hard become gunpla fan those day, everything become so expensive and P-Bandai kick me in the nut.

  9. all things considered, the price is pretty decent.
compared to the third party mechanicore kits that costs 40,700 yen. and those were not good kits to build and despite the crazy details. theyre barely poseable.

be realistic, people who complain. for all the gimmicks and details and the engineering poured in this kit to be able to have articulation like that with all the shit crammed in the frame, im surprised its not priced even higher.

    1. For a plastic kit, I am surprised the kit is not cheaper.

      Delete
    2. Bandai's plastic quality is top tier. You should try bootleg kits, They're horrible. And just because the old PG kit is much cheaper doesn't mean that the new and improved kit should follow its price point.

      Delete
    3. Plastic kit with metal parts, photo etched parts, led lights, plated parts, etc.

Comparable pg's like the Pg strike freedom was 25.000¥
      And the exia was 50.000¥

  10. I see this a limited edition kit?? I completely missed all the preorders, and I’m suuuuper bummed. Is it a full release, like the MGEX? Thanks to anyone who replies!

    1. This is not P-Bandai. Just a regular release. A P-Bandai variation like the G3 would be a limited release.

  11. Bandai is made a new perfect grade in 2020 with non-articulated MG hands.
    Pretty shameless tbh.

    1. Yeah man, and peps think the price is cheap.

    2. Articulated hand tend to loose and cannot grip the weapon very well. Stability over aesthetic.

      Delete
    3. I'd rather we get both. Articulated fully-posable hands if you want to do something weird, and fixed holding hands if you're just going to have the MS hold its guns in a normal way.

BUT if we're only getting one style of hands, I'm glad that it's the fixed ones, especially since the weight of weaponry is going to be an issue as the size of the kit increases.

Compared to other $300 dollar model kits it seems like a decent deal if you have the cash to spend on that kind of luxury.

      Delete
    4. The non-articulated hands are definitely leagues better for holding things like the rifle, sword and shield, no argument there. But I think for a PG, they should have done something like include articulated hands as well, as an option. They could either be for those people who, for whatever reason, prefer to use them to hold things, or more likely, as an alternative to use for expressive poses where they aren't holding anything. At this price, and for the class of this kit and what it's supposed to represent, they should have included them and let the customer choose what they wanted to use. They're a small addition and not a big ask IMO, especially at this price level.

    5. Not ture, all the late MG releases have articulated hands and they grip weapon just fine. The only fixed hands for new MGs are like F-91 Ver 2.0 or Victory Gundams becasue the small size. So PG with fixed hands are just lame.

    6. @unknow

"all the late MG releases have articulated hands and they grip weapon just fine."

No they don't actually. The latest MG releases for the past couple of years like the Barbatos, FAZZ Ver. Ka, the MG Kyrios, etc. don't have fully articulated hands. Any articulation on their provided hands are limited only to the thumb (which isn't load bearing), and the rest of the fingers need parts-swapping for posing and holding the weapons. The old-style MG hands where the other fingers are articulate are no longer in use among recent MG kits.

      Delete
    7. Those are three MGs, previous ones issued in the past years still have the articulated hands which still hold weapons fine. So no reason why PG cannot provide articulated hands.

    8. Mg Kyrios May 2020.
      Mg fazz February 2020.
      Mg barbatos December 2019.
      Mg zaku gunner September 2019.
      Mg nt-1 June 2019.
      Mg ex-s April 2019.
      Mg dynames march 2019.
      Mg jegan July 2018.
      Mg f91 May 2018.
      Mg zz September 2017.

Literally none of the latest MG gunpla have fully articulated hands.
      Don't lie.

  12. Looking at this kit, I am only interested at the Core Fighter and the little Amuro and Sarah figures. I wish I can buy the Core Fighter and the figures separately.

    1. These are rendered images, literally nothing is touching the ground.

Also the image in question is without any armour.

  14. For those wondering, some new images from the Gundam Expo 2020 show that yes, the PG Unleashed will have swappable fixed pose hands.

if youre reading this, mr cheapskate, go wait for daban or dragon momoko. you clearly dont understand economics and Quality-Price-Ratio.
