Price: 102,300 Yen
Built from roughly 2,000 individual components, the model delivers a dense and highly layered construction that immediately sets it apart. Every section of the nu Gundam has been engineered with purpose, combining multiple materials to achieve a realistic, machine-like finish. The exterior armor uses ABS to maintain sharp edges and crisp panel definition, while the internal frame incorporates die-cast metal and etched parts, giving the entire structure a sense of weight and rigidity.
Surface detailing is handled with equal care. Markings are cleanly applied, color separation is precise, and subtle differences in texture help sell the illusion that each section is made from distinct materials. Up close, it feels less like a collectible and more like a scaled-down piece of industrial equipment.
What really defines the Kaitai Shoki lineup is its “constructed reality” approach. Instead of treating the mobile suit as a single form, it breaks it down into functional layers. This is most evident through the model’s extensive hatch-opening gimmicks. Armor panels across the body can be deployed in stages, revealing internal mechanical detail underneath. These aren’t simple flaps either. Each section opens in a way that suggests maintenance access points, reinforcing the idea that the nu Gundam exists as a working machine.
Lighting features add another layer to the presentation. LEDs are built into both the main body and the included display base, highlighting internal sections when the armor is opened and adding depth to the overall display. Combined with the model’s size at approximately 370mm tall, it creates a presence that feels substantial without needing any exaggerated proportions.
Originally released in December 2019, the METAL STRUCTURE Kaitai Shoki nu Gundam quickly established itself as one of the most sought-after high-end Gundam pieces. Its combination of scale, engineering, and presentation set a benchmark that few releases have matched since, which is why this reissue has stayed on collectors’ radar for years.
Pre-orders for the reissue opened on September 4, 2023, with strong interest right out of the gate. The layered construction really shines in its open-hatch display configurations, where the contrast between the clean exterior armor and the dense internal frame becomes the main focus.
A separate Fin Funnel set, first revealed during the original 2019 announcement, is expected to be offered again through Premium Bandai, although a reissue date has not yet been confirmed.
The release comes with a full set of accessories, including a Beam Rifle, Shield, Newtype Hyper Bazooka, two sizes of Beam Sabers with effect parts, a display base, light unit set, catwalk set, maintenance crew figures, and an Amuro Ray figure set. It requires four AAA batteries for the base and three LR41 batteries for the main body.
