Live Action Gundam Announces their Screen Writer!

Sunrise announces in July 2018 that they will collaborate with an American company to bring a live action Gundam film across the globe in the near future.

On Wednesday (March 6, 2019), Deadline news website exclusively reported that New York Times best selling author Brian K. Vaughan will write the scripts for the movie. Vaughan is also known for writing some of the well known comic series; Y: The Last Man, Runaways, and Ex Machina.

The live action film will be produced under Legendary Pictures, the media company who's also responsible for making Pacific Rim, Jurassic World, and Detective Pikachu.


A short clip was also revealed during the Sunrise panel in Anime Expo 2018. No screen date announced just yet, but having the author revealed, it is a good sign that they are already working on the project.

Gundam celebrates its 40th anniversary by releasing new projects for the following years to come. That also includes the anime adaptation of Tomino's Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway's Flash which was revealed by Sunrise as part of their UC NexT 0100 project.

    This is amazing news but while I shudder at the memories of Dragonball Evolution and Attack of Titan, movies like Pacific Rim 1, also from Legendary Pictures and the 1:1 RX-78-2 gives me great hopes that the Gundam franchise will flourish worldwide. (Please make Bandai rich so they stop P-Bandai exclusives).

    As much as I think I would enjoy something like this, think no good can come from a live action Gundam film. Hope it never makes it past anything more than the script phase.

    Usually, projects that rope in award-winning writers tend to rely mostly on the name instead of the actual writing, though of course that depends on the project in question. I'm still fairly optimistic about this project since unlike many other adaptations Mobile Suit Gundam is a very flexible and versatile franchise, i.e. there's so many canons by now that they can make another for the movie and it'd still be ok.
