The road to Gundam’s 50th anniversary in 2029 is already paving its way up to be one of the biggest celebrations in franchise history. During the recent Gundam Conference 2026, Bandai Namco Filmworks revealed a wave of major projects that left longtime fans both emotional and excited for what lies ahead.
One of the biggest highlights was the continued update on the highly anticipated live-action Gundam film directed by Jim Mickle. Fans also received confirmation that Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is finally moving forward as a full theatrical release following the massive success of SEED FREEDOM back in 2024.
The announcements did not stop there. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing also officially revealed a brand-new visual project as part of the anniversary celebration lineup, reigniting excitement for one of Gundam’s most beloved and internationally influential series. At the same time, Bandai Namco introduced GUNDAM-CON 2027, a large-scale celebration event that aims to take Gundam conventions and fan experiences to an entirely new level leading into the franchise’s historic milestone year.
Another major surprise came with the announcement that the original Mobile Suit Gundam will be receiving a brand-new remaster project. While specific details have not yet been revealed, Bandai Namco Filmworks described it as one of the most important projects planned for 2029, making it clear that the original series will play a massive role in the upcoming anniversary celebrations.
Beyond the huge reveals and production updates, one of the most emotional moments from the conference came through the short film “A Boy with Gundam,” now available through the official GundamInfo YouTube Channel. The heartfelt video beautifully captures what it means to grow up with Gundam and share that passion across generations. For many fans, it perfectly reflected how Gundam becomes more than just anime or model kits, becoming part of family memories, friendships, and personal identity through the years.
Unfortunately, amid all the celebrations, fans will also have to prepare to say goodbye to the iconic 1/1 scale The Life-Sized Unicorn Gundam Statue in Odaiba this coming August 2026. After standing proudly for nine years as one of Gundam’s most recognizable landmarks, the statue’s farewell marks the end of an era for many fans who visited Japan specifically to witness it in person. However, Bandai Namco has already lined up that new entertainment experiences and major anniversary projects are being prepared to continue celebrating Gundam’s future heading into its 50th anniversary.
What makes all of this even more impressive is that Gundam continues to grow stronger than ever. Bandai Namco’s FY2026 financial reports already showed the Gundam franchise outperforming even massive titles like Dragon Ball and One Piece in several categories.
From new films and visual projects to remasters, conventions, and global celebrations, Gundam is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. If anything, the franchise feels like it is entering an entirely new era, with longtime fans and newcomers alike fully ready to support Gundam as it marches toward 2029 and beyond.
