The latest installment in the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (pronounced G-Quax), has achieved remarkable box office success with its theatrical pre-release edition, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-. As of February 17, the film has surpassed 2.5 billion yen in revenue and attracted 1.55 million viewers within 31 days of its January 17 premiere. This milestone places it as the second-highest-grossing film in the Gundam movie franchise, surpassing Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space (1982), which earned over 2.3 billion yen.
The highest-grossing Gundam film remains Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM (2024), which shattered records with a total revenue of 5.38 billion yen. Even after a month in theaters, GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- continues to perform strongly, ranking seventh in Japan’s box office rankings during the weekend of February 14–16.
Set in a space colony, the series follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high school girl living a peaceful life until she meets a war refugee named Nyaan. Their encounter draws her into the underground world of illegal mobile suit duels, known as "Clan Battles." Under the alias "Machu," Amate pilots the GQuuuuuuX and fights in relentless battles. Meanwhile, a mysterious Gundam and its pilot, Shuji Ito, appear, setting the stage for a new era of conflict.
This new Gundam series is a collaborative project between Studio Khara, known for the Evangelion series, and Sunrise. While a television anime is scheduled to air on Nippon TV, the theatrical edition serves as an early preview, with some episodes restructured for cinematic release.
The film boasts an impressive lineup of creators, with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time director Kazuya Tsurumaki at the helm. The series composition is handled by Yoji Enokido, while mechanical designs are crafted by Ikuto Yamashita. The main cast includes Tomoyo Kurosawa as Amate (Machu), Yui Ishikawa as Nyaan, and Shinba Tsuchiya as Shuji Ito.
The concept of theatrical pre-screenings for anime has gained popularity in recent years. Notably, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training amassed 1.47 million attendees and grossed 2 billion yen within 10 days of release in 2023. GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- follows this trend, proving to be a major success as it climbs the ranks of Gundam’s cinematic history.
