The Gouf Custom has left an indelible mark on fans with its dynamic and memorable appearances in every episode. Its commanding presence alongside other mobile suits showcases its unmatched appeal. While an official plastic kit is yet to be released, this hasn’t stopped builders from creating their own interpretations of this iconic mobile suit. One such example comes from Omori Kiyoshi, a skilled modeler renowned for his expertise in mixed builds and lacquer brush painting, who has crafted a stunning rendition of the Gouf Custom by splicing together the new HG Zaku II F Type kit and the classic HG Gouf Custom kit.
Omori’s journey began with his fascination for the Gouf Custom’s role in the series, particularly how it stood out with its unique weaponry and design. “I was captivated by the Gouf Custom in full swing until the very end and how cool it looked alongside the other mobile suits. I never imagined I’d end up building such a machine by combining new and old kits,” he shared. Fueled by his enthusiasm, Omori embarked on the ambitious project of recreating the atmosphere of the series through his build.
Central to Omori’s project was the Gatling Shield, a signature feature of the Gouf Custom that embodies its combat prowess. Omori was determined to ensure the shield’s size and proportions matched the series’ aesthetic perfectly. He meticulously shortened the shield to achieve a balanced silhouette, checking its appearance frequently during the process. For the barrel, he discovered that the Gatling included with the MODEROID Vogel'g kit was an ideal fit. Adjustments were made to the muzzle length, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the overall design.
The intricate bullet feed belt was crafted using junk parts, including cylindrical components and tracks from an AFV kit. Omori’s attention to detail brought out the dense, mechanical aesthetic that defines the mobile suits in "Requiem for Vengeance." He also incorporated scale model ship parts, which harmonized beautifully with the 1/144 Gunpla size, enhancing the kit’s sense of realism.
Though Omori frequently mixes parts to create mecha, this project marked the first time he focused primarily on modifying a Gunpla model through kitbashing. This approach allowed him to explore new creative avenues and refine his technique. “It was a very rewarding experience. I’m inspired to create versions of machines that didn’t appear in the series, such as an amphibious variant or a space version with a similar design language,” Omori remarked.
The Gouf Custom Omori crafted is a flex to his creativity and dedication, blending modern and classic kits to achieve a striking result. His work sparks anticipation for an official "Requiem for Vengeance" version of the Gouf Custom, which would undoubtedly be a dream come true for fans. Until then, Omori’s masterpiece serves as an inspiring example of what’s possible when passion and skill come together in the world of Gunpla.
