Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket Turns 35!

This year marks the 35th anniversary of an important turn in anime history: the release of "Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket." This six-episode original video animation (OVA) series, which aired between March 25th and August  25th of 1989, has a special place in the hearts of both Gundam fans and anime enthusiasts. As the first OVA in the Gundam franchise, it not only enlarged the universe but also established new standards for mecha storytelling.

"Gundam 0080" was directed by Fumihiko Takayama, written by Hiroyuki Yamaga, and character designed by Haruhiko Mikimoto. The series, produced by Kenji Uchida and Minoru Takanashi and created by Sunrise Studio, provided viewers with a more intimate, ground-level look of the Gundam universe. Rather than focusing primarily on epic space battles and the grandeur of war, "Gundam 0080" delves into the human side, investigating the effects of conflict on individuals and communities.

Set in the latter days of the One Year War, the story follows Alfred Izuruha, a 10-year-old student living in a neutral space colony. His life changes significantly when he meets Bernie Wiseman, a rookie pilot in the Zeon special forces, and Christina MacKenzie, his former neighbor and test pilot for the new Gundam NT-4 prototype. This odd trio's story is a moving exploration of friendship, devotion, and the loss of innocence during times of conflict.

Megumi Shiina's performances of the opening theme "Itsuka Sora ni Todoite" (Reach Out to the Sky Someday) and the ending theme "Tooi Kioku" (Distant Memory) provide emotional depth to the narrative.
"Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket" is remembered not only for its pioneering role as the franchise's first OVA, but also for its own take on the Gundam story. By focusing on the emotional toll of war through the eyes of a child, it provided a unique perspective that struck a chord with audiences. Its nuanced depiction of all sides of the struggle, paired with a gripping narrative and strong character development, has cemented its place as a beloved series staple.

As we commemorate the 35th anniversary of its premiere, "Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket" stands as a proof to the strength of storytelling in anime. It is nonetheless a touching reminder of the heavy cost of war and the enduring longing for peace, issues that are as relevant now as they were nearly three decades back. This anniversary marks a significant moment in anime history since it continues to convey the eternal message that "Gundam 0080" provided to its viewers.
