REVIEW: BN Gundam Head Collection Vol. 1 RX-78-2 Gundam

The BN Gundam Head Collection RX-78-2 Gundam, was released in October 2023, a much-anticipated addition to the Gundam collections world. It's original retail cost is 1299 Chinese Yuan (about US$180) and is the first volume in a new series of compilations, with hints of more to come in the future. This review will go into the numerous elements of this one-of-a-kind product, weighing its advantages and disadvantages to provide a full summary for prospective buyers and collectors.

Here's me wearing it!

Large Display Piece: The head display is roughly 470mm with the base (375mm without the display base) and 490mm broad including the span of its V-fin. This scale makes it an eye-catching focal point for any display, appealing to collectors who value conspicuous and detailed showpieces.

Light-up feature: The light-up gimmick, which gives a dynamic aspect to the display, is a notable feature. This feature necessitates the use of three AA batteries, which, while not included, are readily available.

Customization Options: The model is fully modifiable, with water slide decals for personalization. This feature is particularly appealing to collectors who prefer personalizing their collectibles.

Modification Potential: Although the head display was not originally designed to be a wearable helmet, it can be customized for this purpose. The eye component contains a removable second layer, indicating that the designers anticipated such changes. Furthermore, it can be comfortably worn with the addition of helmet padding (I bought a set separately), increasing its versatility.

Padding sold separately

Well-Designed Packaging and Display Stand: The RX-78-2 Gundam head's packaging is not only protective, assuring the item's safe travel and delivery, but it also adds to the whole display experience with its basic yet luxury appearance. The addition of a display stand improves its presentation, providing a full package for displaying the model.

Exceptional Detailing: The careful detailing on the head is a huge pro. This feature distinguishes the RX-78-2 Gundam from its other counterparts. The collectible's unusual design, combined with its size, offers a stunning touch. The color separation increases its visual impact by adding depth and contrast, making it stand out even more.

Battery Requirement: The light-up feature requires AA batteries, which are not provided. Though this is a just a minor inconvenience.

Limited Availability and High Price: Due to the model's exclusivity to China and the resulting high cost on foreign marketplaces such as eBay due to shipping and handling, worldwide collectors may face major challenges.

Size Considerations: While its size provides a visual benefit, it may not be suited for collectors with limited display space.

Not Originally Designed to be Wearable: For some, the need for further modifications to use it as a wearable helmet may be a frustrating.

The BN Gundam Head Collection  Vol. 1 RX-78-2 Gundam is a fantastic addition to the Gundam collections scene. Its intricate design, one-of-a-kind touch, and eye-catching color separation set it apart from the other models in the line. While its size and restricted availability present certain difficulties, these characteristics are also part of what makes it a sought-after object among collectors. This model is suitable for collectors who appreciate precise design features, personalization options, and the prestige of possessing a one-of-a-kind and significant piece.
